Hello Alberto, Alex and Jeremy,
I think I have to say some words about the status of building the VA's. I will deliver the first watch just before Tempus. The owner lives in Germany. The next watch will be delivered when I am back from Singapore. The owner lives in Switzerland. The reason I choose watches "near by" is that I need feedback. When there will be no problems I deliver the next watches to the USA and Japan.
The plans for the next series: II this year, III and IV next year.
But I will be carefully to look so far into the future. You know that I build most parts of the VA in my atelier here in Nettetal. For the watch only this are approx 110 different types of parts. (excluding the screws and jewels) Some (or many?) of this parts are very time consuming to produce.
A rough calculation: If I would need 1 day to produce one type of part it will be take 110 days to produce all parts for the watch. At the first view it may be astonish to say 1 day for one part. But I suggest that it is not completely wrong. This 110 days do not include the time every watch need to pass all the testing procedures and - of course - do not include any hour which must be spend for the design, making prototypes and so on....
Of course there are several ways to minimise and/or to divide the needed time to build a watch.
1. Outsorcing (Maybe the first and most logical) 2. Take on Workers 3. Optimize the production
3 1/2 years ago I started by zero. So I have to find the balance between finance and time. Because I know that my financial cushion will be shrink, rather than grow I concentrate me on point three - the optimization of the part design and the production processes. Maybe this was a decision of the expense of those people who ordered a VA early. I aware that and I am extremely thankful because theirs patience and patronizing. I hope I can give them back something as I build a watch for them with 150% of passion and value. A other reason I choose point 3 instead of 1 or 2 was that I want to be independent. Independent from supplier, from prescribed designs/materials/time lines, from interpersonal compromises.
At the moment I am under considerable strain. I know that my time frame drift to zero. But spending so many time to maximise my production facilities (on only 58 m^2) was the only way for me to bring the VA to live. I know ... most people say that I am crazy. But that's me ...
